HOPE Peer Health Educator

Position Desription
Under the general direction of the SHCS: HOPE & Wellness Coordinator in the California
State University San Marcos (CSUSM), Student Health & Counseling Services, seeks an
enthusiastic HOPE Peer Health Educator who will provide support of health programs
and outreach. The HOPE Peer Health Educator will work with the HOPE Lead Peer Educator
and Peer Health Specialist to fulfill the mission of the HOPE & Wellness Center to
engage CSUSM students, faculty, and staff in healthy behaviors through promotion of
awareness campaigns, content for educational workshops and leading educational programs
to support students’ well-being. The HOPE Peer Health Educator will work collaboratively
with departments across divisions and other community partners to cultivate a healthy
campus environment that engages in students’ well-being through development of educational
outreach on topics such as mental health, sexual health, nutrition, sexual violence
prevention, substance misuse, etc. The HOPE Peer Health Educator will assist with
social media marketing. The HOPE Peer Health Educator will assist and advise student
peer educators team to assist with promoting and executing events of SHCS and HOPE
& Wellness Center.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning, development, and implementation of campus-wide health program
with the education and advocacy team, including logistics and coordinating of social
media campaigns, marketing of health programs and initiatives with the peer health
educators.
- Coordinate SHCS/HOPE & Wellness events, and workshops; including classroom presentations/lectures.
Must Lead or Co-Lead two events and one presentation/workshop.
- Assist in writing content for print, web and social media.
- Assist in supporting the mission and vision of both the Student Health & Counseling
Services and HOPE & Wellness Center.
- Assist in staffing outreach events/programs.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the HOPE & Wellness Coordinator within Student
Health & Counseling Services and HOPE & Wellness Center.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A current CSUSM student in good academic standing with at least a 2.5 GPA or higher.
- Ability to complete HOPE Peer Health Educator duties up to 8 hours per week for the
full academic year (August to May), including some weekends and evenings.
- Are a motivated self-starter with excellent organizational skills and a strong interest
in health.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and Social Media.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

- Attend all trainings/meetings to facilitate peer education programs.
- Ability to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of
the University community and establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships
with diverse employees, students, and the surrounding community.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills to use with diverse students
and colleagues.
- Have strong writing skills – and can perform writing assignments with little supervision.
- Ability to work with a team and colleagues to execute events.
- Ability to work on multiple projects at once while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced
environment.
- Ability to lead and assist in presenting workshops/trainings.
- Strong organization and leadership skills, including the ability to develop working
relationships and serve as a role model for other students.
- Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic.
- Ability to author project reports independently utilizing English grammar and university-level
writing skills and abilities.
- Familiarity with utilizing social media such as Facebook, Instagram, and other applicable
social media outlets for marketing purposes.
- Detail oriented and highly organized.
- Computer proficiency including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation-based
programs, and ability to learn other programs quickly (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).
- Ability and desire to actively participate in supervision activities at least one
hour per week.
- Successful completion of the application, screening, and interview process. Must be
a sophomore or second year standing and above to apply.
