Civic Engagement Ambassador Program (CEA)

The Civic Engagement Ambassador Program is a paid opportunity for CSUSM students who are passionate about serving their communities on and off campus.

Civic Engagement Ambassadors (CEAs) are tasked with building campus culture surrounding Civic Engagement. As ambassadors, they show their fellow students through their own actions what Civic Engagement looks like!

Through the program, the CEA's design, with support from Civic Engagement professional staff, their own "Civic Engagement in Action" projects.

Civic Engagement in Action projects can include things like working with a local community organization, government, or legal office on a community issue of their choice. The CEAs then create weekly social media posts, and plan tabling and workshop outreach on the issue to educate their fellow students.

During election years, the CEAs also focus on non-partisan peer to peer voter outreach where they educate fellow students through classroom presentations, tabling, and social media posts on the importance of voting, and how to register to vote and/or check your registration status.

  • Anthony Mejia

    I am from Orange County, am studying political science as well as economics and hope to pursue a career in international diplomacy and/or relations.

    What I've been working on:

    - Educating students on civics basics (how to make sure local government hears from you and that your voice matters!).

    - Creating reflective workshops for youth at Boys & Girls Club of Vista where they create their own worlds and national flags to increase thinking about how societies and governments are formed and what matters to them.

    - Collaborating with my club, Global Studies Club, and American Language and Culture Institute on Global Conversations on civics topics.

    I am a first generation college student from Los Angeles County. I majored in Criminology & Criminal Justice with a minor in Writing & Literature and am part of the Class of 2025! I hope to become an immigration attorney because no human being is illegal 🙂. I hope that from my work students from all backgrounds can be empowered in their identities. 

    What I've been working on:

    - Volunteering with local non-profit Universidad Popular in their civics and citizenship classes.

    - Bringing the same education I've learned in the classes at Universidad Popular to CSUSM students through tabling and workshop events.

    I am a social science major with a primary focus on psychological science and a criminology and justice studies minor. I hope to have a career in research and in any space that needs someone to find, create, or access resources for others.

    I love to empower others through knowledge and self-love skills!

    What I've been working on: 

    - Encouarging students to practice Self Advocacy Skills -- because they are critical and they are for everyone!

    This semester focused on getting students engaged and registered to vote fro the Fall 2024 general presidential election.

    CSUSM’s cohort of student Civic Engagement Ambassadors facilitated the following programming during the Fall 2024 semester:

    • 11 voter registration information classroom presentations (averaging 35 students each, approximately 385 students reached).
    • 1 voter registration training workshop for all on campus housing advisors.
    • 6 specialized workshops with on campus identity centers and groups (including Pride Center, College Assistance Migrant Program, Latinx Center, Cross Cultural Center, Dreamer Resource Office, and Project Rebound).
    • 3 voting information tabling events on high traffic areas on campus during National Voter Registration Day, Vote Early Day and Election Day.
    • 1 What’s on the Ballot information session facilitated by local League of Women Voters Chapter.
    • Social media posting throughout the election cycle with registration information, links to non-partisan information, and information on how to cast ballots on campus.

    All of their outreach efforts included information shared through a QR code on how to register through the CA Secretary of State’s website, and to specifically indicate affiliation with CSUSM for the CA College Ballot Bowl, run through the Secretary’s Office. CSUSM's numbers for the College Ballot Bowl ended up being 552 registrations.

    • 9.17 National Voter Registration Day (162 students attended)
    • 9.26 to Vote or Not to Vote (31 students attended)
    • 10.8 What’s on the Ballot (144 students attended)
    • 10.29 Vote Early Day (109 students attended)
    • 11.5 Election Day (122 students attended)
    • Total 568 students attended our events
